Here’s a brief history of GYSD:

Global Youth Service Day was launched in 2000 based on the successful implementation of National Youth Service Day, inspired by Youth Service America, which has mobilized millions of young people in service projects every April throughout the United States since 1989. Marking the 20th anniversary of National Youth Service Day, the celebrations were effectively combined under the name Global Youth Service Day. This single branding helps cement the initiative as the world’s largest celebration of young volunteers, and underscores the global scope of activities that take place.
